Anatomy of a Cigar

LC 1 4 2 3 5
1
WrapperThe outer leaf. It sets much of the flavor and the whole first impression — its color is how cigars are often described.
2
BinderThe sturdy leaf just under the wrapper that holds the bunch together.
3
FillerThe blend of leaves at the core — this drives the body and strength.
4
CapThe rounded, closed end. You cut this before you smoke.
5
FootThe open end you light.

Find Your Strength

“Strength” is the nicotine punch; “body” is how full the flavor feels. New smokers do best starting mild and working up. Tap any level to shop it.

Cut, Light & Enjoy

01

Cut

Take a clean cut just above the cap's shoulder — straight, punch, or V. Don't cut too deep or the cigar unravels.

02

Toast & Light

Hold the foot near the flame without touching it and rotate until the edge glows evenly, then gently draw to light.

03

Draw & Savor

Puff gently, about once a minute — don't inhale. Let it rest between draws and it stays cool and flavorful.

Storage & the 70/70 Rule

Cigars are agricultural — they dry out or over-humidify quickly. Keep them around 70°F and 65–70% humidity in a humidor with a hygrometer. Too dry and they burn hot and harsh; too wet and they won't draw. A properly seasoned humidor — or a humidity pack in an airtight box — does the job.

Lounge Etiquette

Do

  • Let the ash grow and fall on its own — it keeps the burn cool.
  • Rest the cigar on the tray between draws.
  • Smell and taste before you judge — give it a few draws to open up.
  • Let a finished cigar go out gracefully in the ashtray.

Don't

  • Don't inhale — cigars are for the palate, not the lungs.
  • Don't tap or roll the ash off constantly, and don't stub it out.
  • Don't relight a long-cold cigar hours later; it turns bitter.
  • Don't dip your cigar in your drink (yes, really).
